Western Springs is home to many opportunities for family fun.  The local Thomas Ford Memorial Library is home to over 80,000 books, periodicals, ebooks, films, and more, and every summer they operate adult and children’s reading programs with local prizes.  They are connected to the Swan Library Network, which allows cardholders access to over 1 million books, movies, and more. The Village Club is a social club available for families to join, and this venue on Lawn Avenue hosts theme parties for adults and kids and operates a bowling alley in its basement.  The La Grange Country Club, 6 minutes away, and the Butterfield Country Club, 15 minutes away, are both also nearby, and they offer golf, caddy, and swimming opportunities for adults and kids.  The Western Springs Service Club also operates a pool during the summer with a swim team and adult swim opportunities, as well as basic swim lessons and two water slides.  The Theatre of Western Springs offers school year classes and summer camps for kids, training them in acting, improvisation, clowning, and even stage combat, and they also have over 10 performances and plays throughout the year for adults and kids.  The Western Springs Park District offers over 89 acres of parks and green spaces, and the Recreation Center operates camps and sports in the parks like lacrosse, basketball, tennis, and even fly fishing and Irish dance.  The Rec Center also offers classes for kids, adults, and experience levels in subjects like chess, sewing, movie making, art and drawing, and foreign languages like Spanish and Mandarin.  Jo’s Footwork Studio, a dance education company, also holds classes in the Rec Center for all ages, experience levels, and interests.  Seaspar, an organization for individuals with different levels of ability, also holds classes and programs in Western Springs and other western suburbs.  There are no shortage of family events in Western Springs, like the Tower Trot, a 5k held every year to benefit Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation, and the annual Gathering on the Green, a fun outdoor festival held to celebrate local businesses and promote Western Springs community togetherness.  Western Springs is only 16 minutes from the world-class Brookfield Zoo, and it’s also possible to ride bikes to the zoo on along the 6.6-mile Salt Creek Forest Preserve bike trail. With over 450 species of animals, and camps, programs, and events for the whole family, there is no shortage of entertainment at the zoo.  Family memberships, with unlimited admission for two adults and their children, and access to guest tickets (as well as other add-on discounts) begin at only $105 for a full year.

 

The proximity to shopping in Western Springs is unparalleled among other western suburbs.  Oakbrook Center, an outdoor mall with 165 shops, is just 15 minutes away and Yorktown Center, with over 105 stores, only 16 minutes away.  Downtown La Grange is only 6 minutes away, and this features plenty of local shops and small businesses, as well as plenty of free parking.  Downtown Western Springs also features a number of shopping options and small businesses, like the local Elite Fitness and Gym, which features exercise classes and plenty of other workout machines.  Other shops include the Hair Studio Blu, which imports custom haircolor from Rome, the local branch of the west suburban Hinsdale Bank and Trust, which features personalized local banking attention and the Junior Saviors program, which helps kids learn about money smarts with their own account and plenty of perks (like free ice cream sundaes and raffles for movie tickets!)  In La Grange, families can see second-run movies at the La Grange Theatre for only $5.50 per child ticket and $6.50 for adults. Western Springs has its own branch of Mariano’s in Garden Market, making grocery shopping a breeze.  There’s also a Whole Foods about 4 minutes away in Hinsdale, and the local shop Casey’s, which has an expansive selection of artisanal meat.  The village also operates the French Market every Thursday during the summer, which features some gourmet food stands and many fruits, vegetables, and treats.  Look at http://www.westernspringsbusiness.com for more information.
